Ryan Routh Found Guilty Of Attempting To Assassinate Trump On Golf Course
A Florida jury convicted 59-year-old Ryan Wesley Routh on all counts of attempting to assassinate then-candidate Donald Trump at his Florida golf course last September.
Jurors deliberated just two and a half hours on Tuesday before finding him guilty of those counts, along with assaulting a Secret Service agent and three federal gun charges. He faces life in prison.
HOW WE GOT HERE
Routh represented himself at the two-week trial despite not being a lawyer. He called a firearms expert and two longtime friends in his defense, but admitted to writing a letter that prosecutors say outlined his plans to kill Trump.
He attempted to argue that there was no crime since he did not fire a shot at Trump.
The Secret Service spotted his rifle poking in a bush within a few hundred yards of Trump. He was arrested after fleeing the scene.
The Florida assassination attempt came just weeks after a Butler, Pennsylvania rally in July 2024 where another gunman, Thomas Crooks, attempted to kill Trump and wounded his ear. Crooks was shot and killed on site. Many details about him remain murky more than a year later.
